American Airlines donates $1.1 Million to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

  • Over the past 38 years, American has raised more than $45 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through the annual Celebrity Ski event.
  • This year, the airline made a $25,000 donation in honor of Chief Customer Officer Alison Taylor and her commitment to the organization ahead of her upcoming retirement.
  • CF Foundation awarded American’s former executive Elise Eberwein with its prestigious Jena Award for her service to the foundation and its mission.

American Airlines and its partners raised more than $1.1 million to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation this month at the Celebrity Ski event in Beaver Creek, Colorado. To date, American has raised more than $45 million for CF Foundation through the annual event.

“For nearly four decades, we’ve gathered on the ski slopes with a group of generous team members, sponsors and supporters of the foundation to rally for the fight against cystic fibrosis,” said American Airlines Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Ron DeFeo. “While the event is filled with skiing and fun, the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is incredibly important, and we are proud to do our part in combating this serious disease.”

More than 400 people attended the event this year, including celebrities from the sports and entertainment industries. Attendees skied alongside Olympic athletes and enjoyed performances by John Oates and Warner Music recording artist Teddy Swims.

To commemorate her upcoming retirement and note her long-time dedication to supporting the foundation, American donated $25,000 on behalf of Chief Customer Officer Alison Taylor to assist the organization in its mission to cure CF.

Attendees hit the slopes alongside Olympic athletes.

Celebrity Ski attendees enjoy the slopes of Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Elise Eberwein accepts the CF Foundation’s Jena Award on March 23.

Funds raised from this year’s event will help advance the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation — the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation supports a broad range of research initiatives to fight CF, which is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas and other organs.

“American Airlines, our longest-standing corporate supporter of nearly 40 years, has advanced our mission for all those living with cystic fibrosis — raising more than $45 million cumulatively,” said Patrick Feeley, Chief Development Officer, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Their generosity has led to more people with CF living longer than at any time in history. Special thanks to this year’s event sponsors — Title Sponsor American Airlines; Co-presenting Citi and MasterCard; Diamond Sponsor T-Mobile for Business; and Platinum Sponsor FedEx. We are immensely grateful for your support.”

On March 23, the CF Foundation presented American’s former executive Elise Eberwein, who retired from the airline last year, with one of the highest honors the foundation awards each year. Elise received the foundation’s Jena Award, which recognizes a volunteer who does not have a direct connection to CF but goes above and beyond to support the mission.

Airbus has four A320 Family final assembly facilities around the world: Hamburg, Germany; Toulouse, France; Tianjin, China; and Mobile, United States. With the conversion of the Tianjin facility last year, and with the newest facility about to complete its transformation in Toulouse, the global industrial system will be fully A321-capable, creating flexibility and agility to meet Airbus’ ramp up objectives and the rising market success of the A321 model.

Inaugurated in 2008, the FAL in Tianjin was the first Airbus commercial aircraft assembly line outside Europe. In the same year, the first aircraft sections arrived on site. Since its first A320 delivery in 2009, Airbus’ FAL in Tianjin has delivered more than 600 aircraft over its 14 years in operation. The A321neo is the longest-fuselage member of Airbus’ best-selling, single-aisle A320 Family, comfortably seating as many as 244 passengers, with a longest range reaching 4,700nm/8,700km. Featuring the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, the A320neo Family offers at least  20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 as well as a 50 percent noise reduction compared to previous generation aircraft, thanks to incorporating the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets. By the end of January 2023, the A320neo Family had received over 8,600 firm orders from more than 130 customers worldwide.

TAP closed 2022 with a net profit of €65.6 million, an increase of €1,664.7 million on the previous year.

EBIT, including non-recurring items of €19.4 million, was also positive at €268.2 million.

In 2022, revenues reached €3,485.0 million, 151% above FY 2021, along with a higher level of activity (ASK increased 94.2%).

The number of flights operated also increased significantly by 74.9% last year, reaching 79% of pre-crisis levels.

Capacity reached 87% of pre-crisis levels, increasing 94.2% compared to the previous year.

Load Factor improved by 17 percentage points year-on-year to 80%, just 0.1 percentage points below the 2019 level.

Recurring operating costs also increased by 73.4% to €3,236.2 million, resulting in a positive recurring EBIT of €248.8 million, an increase of €726.7 million, or 4.7 times the amount in fiscal 2019.

Fuel costs more than tripled, increasing by €756.2 million year-on-year to €1,096.7 million. Despite leading to a positive effect of €85.5 million, hedging only marginally reduced the effect of the increase in fuel prices, which alone contributed €458.4 million to the increase in fuel costs.

For the first full year of the Restructuring Plan, TAP generated an operating profit that is an all-time record for the company. TAP also delivered a very strong positive net income despite its level of leverage.”

Eswatini Air to launch operations on March 26

Eswatini Air is a new Eswatini-based airline and the new flag carrier for the nation, formerly known as Swaziland.

The new airline was originally planning to commence operations in June 2022 but was delayed.

The AOC was obtained in December 2022.

Operations are scheduled to commence on March 26, 2023 with initial flights to Johannesburg, with expanding service to Durban, Cape Town and Harare.

The company issued this statement:

Royal Eswatini National Airways Corporation (RENAC) would like to update stakeholders and the general public on the latest developments about Eswatini Air taking to the skies.

Since the approval of our Air Operator Certificate (AOC), several preparatory and post-AOC actions have been initiated. We have made tremendous progress in securing the necessary documentation to operate to the different destinations we will be flying to.

So far, we have received our Foreign Operator Permit (FOP) for Zimbabwe and the FOP for South Africa is in the process. We expect to have everything regarding that smoothed out very soon.

RENAC has also been assigned airline codes by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The assigned IATA 2 letter code is R/ while the IATA 3 digit accounting prefix is 507. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has also assigned codes used for airline identification when operating international flights. These codes are used for facilitating communication between the airline and Air Navigation Services Providers or Airspace Management agencies. The two codes applicable are SZL
as the 3 letter designator, and Eswatini is the Telephony designator.

Following that, we applied for landing and departure slots at OR Tambo International, King Shaka International, Cape Town International in South Africa and at Robert Gabriel Mugabe (Harare) International Airport in Zimbabwe.
