WestJet takes partnership with the Calgary Stampede to new heights

WestJet celebrated a five-year renewed commitment with the Calgary Stampede.

Over the next five years, WestJet will be the official airline of the Calgary Stampede, serving as a Champion Level sponsor of the outdoor event with the airline sponsoring the bull riding rodeo events, the iconic WestJet Skyride and an on-site activation rewarding Stampede guests with exciting prizes like free flights.

Established in 2003, WestJet and the Calgary Stampede’s partnership was founded on a mutual connection of bringing the world to Western Canada to experience all it has to offer. With a shared commitment to community, the two Calgary based brands are proud to come together to provide neighbours and visitors with an exceptional experience not only from July 7-16, but all year round.

With the inclusion of Minneapolis to Edmonton’snetwork, WestJet has increased Edmonton’s transborder capacity this summer by over 150 per cent and its total network capacity by over 40 per cent marking the airline’s largest network expansion from a single city in its history.

The WestJet Group and ALPA reach tentative agreement

The WestJet Group and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the certified union representing WestJet and Swoop pilots, today announced they have reached a tentative agreement on the second collective bargaining agreement between the organizations. Both parties now await the ratification vote to be put forward to membership.

The WestJet Group is ramping up its operations as quickly and efficiently as possible, however the full resumption of operations will take time. Guests remain encouraged to continue to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

WestJet Group begins flight cancellations in anticipation of WestJet and Swoop pilot strike

WestJet Group has made this announcement:

As the WestJet Group prepares for labour action by WestJet and Swoop pilots, the airline has started taking down its network. This action ensures the airline can avoid abandoning aircraft in remote locations without support and enables the proactive communication with guests and crew to minimize the potential for being stranded. The decision to cancel flights comes as the WestJet Group remains in a stalemate with the union regarding unreasonable wage expectations that if realized would permanently damage the financial viability of the group’s future.

“We are extremely disheartened to find ourselves in a place where we have to activate our contingency plan and subsequent takedown of our network as a result of the strike notice served by ALPA and their inability to accept a reasonable offer. We deeply regret the disruption this will have on the travel plans of our guests and the communities and businesses that rely on our critical air service,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, Chief Executive Officer, the WestJet Group. “We remain at a critical impasse with the union and have been left with no choice but to begin taking the painful steps of preparing for the reality of a work stoppage.”

Given that a tentative agreement has not yet been reached, the WestJet Group is parking the majority of its 737 and 787 fleet, in a measured, phased and safe approach. WestJet Encore, WestJet Link as well as limited 737 flights will continue to operate during this time.

“We remain at the bargaining table, unequivocally committed to achieving a deal as soon as possible, but are equally ready to weather labour action for as long as it takes to arrive at a reasonable outcome,” continued von Hoensbroech. “Any guest impact is too high of a cost in the wake of these negotiations and we sincerely apologize that valued guests were caught in the middle of an avoidable conflict.”

WestJet to lock out its ALPA pilots

The WestJet Group has issued a lockout notice to the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the union that represents WestJet and Swoop pilots, in response to their strike notification. A work stoppage could occur as early as Friday, May 19, 2023, at 3 a.m. MT.

Issuing notice does not mean a work stoppage will occur. However, in the coming days, the WestJet Group will take all necessary actions to manage the impacts as much as possible, including:

  • Beginning preparations to operate a reduced schedule – unfortunately, this will be a significant reduction from WestJet and Swoop’s current networks.
  • Proactively managing changes and cancellations, to ensure the ability to communicate with guests in advance of changes.
  • Providing flexible change and cancel options for those who wish to make alternate arrangements.

Throughout negotiations, the WestJet Group has brought forward a generous contract that if agreed to will make its first officers and captains the highest paid narrow-body pilots in Canada, with a significant advantage over the next best paying Canadian airline. Furthermore, the proposed contract makes generous advancements to address the concerns of WestJet and Swoop pilots surrounding job security and scope. Despite efforts to be reasonable and provide significant improvements to the current contract, the union maintains its expectation of closing in towards U.S.–like wages, despite living and working in Canada. This expectation is not reasonable and is impeding the WestJet Group’s ability to reach an agreement in advance of the upcoming long weekend.

WestJet Group statement regarding ALPA strike authorization vote

The WestJet Group has issued the following statement regarding the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) announcement of the results of the strike authorization vote to WestJet pilots.

“A strike authorization vote is a common step by unions in context of the overall labour negotiation process and does not mean a strike will occur,” said Diederik Pen, WestJet Group Chief Operating Officer. “We remain unwaveringly committed to achieving an agreement that is competitive within Canada’sairline industry and ensures we have a long-term sustainable future so that we can continue to operate critical air service for millions of Canadians, while providing jobs for thousands at the WestJet Group.”

WestJet provides state of the airline address, update on progress against growth plan

WestJet today provided a comprehensive update on the progress it is making against its new strategic direction, which was introduced in June 2022 and is focused on building a strong, resilient low-cost airline that has a clear runway for growth. WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech provided the update as part of a State of the Airline address to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

“We are now seeing the benefits of our new strategy coming to life across Canada; it is ambitious, laser-focused on our strengths and brings back more of what Canadians love about WestJet,” said von Hoensbroech. “At WestJet, our proposition is to ‘love where you are going.’ This plan focuses on just that – where we are going as an airline, as an employer, and as a connector of people, businesses and communities across Canada. It will strengthen our airline, ensure our long-term profitability and set us apart from our competitors.”

Key progress against WestJet’s growth plan

In his remarks, von Hoensbroech summarized WestJet’s progress against its growth plan in three key areas: (1) returning WestJet to its roots as Western Canada’s home carrier, (2) growing its leisure and sun destination offering across all of Canada and connecting Canadians with domestic service from coast-to-coast and (3) providing affordable airfares as a low-cost carrier (LCC).

Advancements in these areas, since the plan was first introduced in 2022, include:

Returning to roots as Western Canada’s home carrier

  • In partnership with the Government of Alberta, committing significant capacity growth into Calgary to double its offering to more than 20 million annual seats before the end of the decade, including basing all intercontinental Boeing 787 Dreamliner flying in Calgary.
  • Significant double-digit capacity growth across most major and mid-sized airports across Western Canada.
  • Introducing 20 new routes and three new destinations between Western Canada and the United States, including new non-stop service to Washington, Detroit and Minneapolis, with new routes added to Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Nashville and Seattle.

In advancing its growth plan, WestJet has been working closely with communities and regions across the West to prioritize the flights they need to build their economies.

Expanding sun and leisure flying across Canada and focused growth in Eastern Canada

  • Expanding direct flights with a 13 per cent increase in total capacity between Eastern and Western Canada, including new or resumed nonstop routes from:
    • Edmonton to London, Moncton, Charlottetown, Ottawa and Montreal;
    • Calgary to Thunder Bay, Quebec City and Moncton;
    • Vancouver to Halifax, and resumed flights to Montreal; and
    • Comox to Toronto;
  • Securing all required regulatory approvals for WestJet’s proposed acquisition of Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations and advancing towards the close of the transaction.

In his address, von Hoensbroech noted, “I want to be clear on this point, we will be growing in the East. Our growth in the East will focus on point-to-point travel to Western Canada, and all elements of leisure travel. WestJet’s position as Eastern Canada’s leisure airline will be further strengthened once the acquisition of Sunwing is concluded.”

Providing affordable airfares as a stronger, more Resilient low-cost carrier

  • Ensuring the Boeing 737 remains the backbone of the WestJet fleet, with the largest order book for new Boeing aircraft of any airline in Canada.
  • Maintaining one of North America’s youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets; including the future addition of the 737-10, which has one of the lowest costs per seat among mid-range aircraft and lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
  • Advancing WestJet’s traditional cost advantage over its main competitors

“We are returning to being the friendly, reliable and affordable airline Canadians love. With this plan, we are focusing on what made WestJet successful when then airline was first introduced to Canada– operating as a stronger, more resilient low-cost carrier delivering a modern experience to our guests at an affordable price,” said von Hoensbroech.

Introduction of an Operational Excellence program

The airline has also introduced an Operational Excellence program that will re-design the experience across all touchpoints of a potential disruption throughout the travel journey, with a focus on digital enhancements, IT infrastructure management and operational resilience.

Key elements of the Operational Excellence program include:

  • Improving guest facing capabilities, timely and accurate communications and expanded self-serve tools during disruptions.
  • Investing in back-end system development to ensure WestJet employees have the information and tools to keep the company’s operations moving.
  • Creating greater schedule resilience that will isolate disruptions and allow for faster recovery during operational challenges of all types.

WestJet is the first airline in Canada to fly Aero Design Lab’s drag reduction modification kit on a Boeing 737-700

Aero Design Labs (ADL) has announced the first revenue flight in Canada with its proprietary drag reduction kit installed, with a WestJet Boeing 737-700 aircraft operating from Calgary to Toronto on March 20, 2023.

As part of the testing and certification process, WestJet was the first airline in the world to install and operate with an ADL drag reduction kit on its aircraft. This milestone follows the Transport Canada issuance of a Supplemental Type Certificate for ADL’s drag reduction kit for installation on the Boeing 737-700 aircraft in December 2022.

Through the use of proprietary computational fluid dynamics analysis, ADL’s drag reduction kits reduce the amount of drag on the aircraft which results in a reduced fuel burn and lowered CO2 emissions.

WestJet Cargo receives approval on behalf of Transport Canada certifying its 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters

WestJet Cargo today announced that it has received Transport Canada’s approval and official certification of its four 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCF).

Following certification, WestJet Cargo and the GTA Group will expeditiously implement three freighters into service, as dedicated aircraft that will fulfill the large-scale needs of businesses, freight forwarders, shippers and individual customers across North America. The fourth of WestJet Cargo’s dedicated freighters is expected to join the accompanying fleet later this year, following the completion of its conversion.

Seamlessly integrating into WestJet Cargo’s existing operations and operated by WestJet’s highly skilled 737 pilots, the dedicated freighters will initially focus service within North America, serving Calgary, Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Miami.

Leveraging its quick to load and fly narrow body aircraft, the 737-800 equipped with CFM56-7Bengines will enable WestJet Cargo to offer greater fuel efficiency, flexibility and frequency for its customers, beginning April 22, 2023.
