77 routes, 32 destinations: Delta’s largest-ever trans-Atlantic schedule takes flight

Delta’s largest trans-Atlantic schedule ever is officially in full operation, and customers are flocking to idyllic locations like the golden beaches of France’s enchanting Cote d’Azur, sun-soaked Mediterranean islands and other vibrant cities brimming with history.

Kirkjufell is a 463m high mountain on the north coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula, near the town of Grundarfjörður.

Customers traveling on Delta can take advantage of more than 650 weekly flights across the pond in peak summer, a remarkable 30% increase in the airline’s seat capacity compared to 2022. The line-up features 77 total routes to 32 destinations across Europe and beyond, including many places where Delta operates as the largest U.S. carrier during peak summer: Italy, Iceland, France and Greece. In the past three months alone, the airline has launched or restarted 32 of these routes, most originating from key Delta hubs in Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York-JFK.

FROM ATLANTA

In March, Delta renewed a daily connection between Atlanta and Tel Aviv. In May, the airline also introduced new daily flights between Atlanta and Nice, France, complementing existing service from New York-JFK, which has become one of the airline’s most sought-after seasonal routes.

And Atlanta customers seeking to explore the scenic highlands or immerse themselves in majestic castles can now fly directly to Edinburgh, Scotland, following the launch of new daily service in May, which builds on existing service from New York-JFK and Boston.

FROM LOS ANGELES

As the largest global carrier at LAX, Delta reinforced its leading position by reconnecting customers to Paris — a year-round destination known for iconic landmarks, and a daily route that will serve as a crucial connection point for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 and LA28.

Delta people, customers and friends celebrate the departure of Delta Flight 290 from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).

Delta also responded to the high demand for summer travel by resuming daily nonstop service from Los Angeles to London Heathrow.

FROM NEW YORK-JFK

Delta has set new records at JFK with its largest trans-Atlantic schedule from that hub. Operating more than 230 weekly departures to 26 destinations, this schedule includes new additions like Geneva and the return of summer seasonal favorites like Reykjavík, Iceland; Venice, Italy; Prague; Nice; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Delta also made a highly anticipated comeback to London Gatwick after a 15-year absence and restored its flights to Berlin, bringing its flying capacity back to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

FROM DETROIT

Just this week, Delta launched daily flights from Detroit to Rome, offering customers an exciting opportunity to explore the majesty and mystery of the Ancient Roman era. Additionally, Delta’s recent introduction of brand-new daily service to Reykjavik opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for adventure-seeking customers.

Delta reaches penultimate milestone at LAX with opening of Delta One check-in and west headhouse

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports have finished the second-to-last major phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project, with Terminal 3 now offering another entry point via the west headhouse as well as a dedicated check-in area for its Delta One customers.

The west headhouse, which features self-service kiosks to drop bags and/or print boarding passes, gives customers another entry point to easily check in and get to security. Later this summer, Delta expects to implement digital ID technology at bag drop and security checkpoints, allowing eligible customers to use their biometric data to more seamlessly move through the airport.

An exclusive Delta One check-in area, located on the lower arrivals level of Terminal 3, offers a private TSA screening lane and direct access to the Delta Sky Club. Delta One customers will be greeted by a team of Elite Service agents dedicated to providing white-glove service, and the space will offer refreshing towels as well as light food and beverage offerings. The Delta One check-in area will also feature one-of-a-kind artwork from two local artists in partnership with ArtLifting, a social enterprise that champions artists impacted by disabilities and housing insecurity.

Additional latest terminal enhancements include the addition of 100 more seats to the Delta Sky Club, the re-opening of the original Terminal 3 passenger tunnel, complete with its signature 1960s tile mosaic and direct access to baggage claim, an enlarged T3 Help Center, and a second connection point to LAX’s automated people mover system when it opens in mid-2024.

Terminal 3 made its debut last year, with a centralized check-in lobby, expanded security checkpoint and baggage claim area, and state-of-the-art Delta Sky Club. Delta was able to accelerate project timelines and will deliver the state-of-the-art, 1.2-million-square-foot, 27-gate complex 18 months earlier than originally planned. The final milestone of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project — the airside connector to the Tom Bradley International Terminal — is expected to be complete in August 2023 and will eliminate the need to bus between terminals.

A message to Delta SkyMiles members from CEO Ed Bastian: More to enjoy this summer

There’s an energy in the air. It’s a feeling of joy and anticipation for the summer ahead. And with more than 1,500 weekly flights to 80 international cities this season, including brand-new routes like New York-JFK to Geneva and Atlanta to Nice, the world is ripe for exploration.

We deeply value the trust you place in us to get you to your destination safely and on time. We’ve spent months preparing for this busy travel season, investing heavily to ensure our team of 90,000 worldwide is ready to deliver a reliable, high-quality experience, paired with the signature warmth and compassion you’ve come to expect when you fly with us.

Whether you’re embarking on a new adventure or returning to a favorite summer spot, here are some things to look forward to this season.

A MORE CONNECTED JOURNEY

Fast, free Wi-Fi is now available on most domestic flights, so as a SkyMiles Member, you can browse, stream or message just like you would on the ground. And as our Delta Sync Exclusives experience rolls out, you’ll soon be able to unlock even more relevant and tailored content, plus other offers from brands you know and love. We also have the most seatback screens of any U.S.-based carrier by far, with countless options to keep you entertained. And you can expect to see free Wi-Fi on all international and regional flights by the end of 2024.

Starting in June, you can also look for a special documentary on board called “The Steepest Climb.” It’s a behind-the-scenes story featuring the heroic efforts of Delta people to carry us safely through the pandemic. It’s a project that’s near and dear to my heart, and I’d encourage you to give it a viewing while you’re on board.

AN ELEVATED EXPERIENCE, ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR

If you’ve flown through Los Angeles, Chicago-O’Hare or New York-LaGuardia lately, you’ve experienced first-hand the investments that we’ve made to transform our airports from coast to coast. We’ve also taken measures to reduce the volumes in our Delta Sky Clubs, including robust expansion plans and beautiful new Clubs in Minneapolis, Chicago and Kansas City, with a second Club in New York-JFK opening later this summer. And we’re trying out a new “on the go” Club experience in select cities, a convenient food and beverage option for Delta Sky Club customers who are short on time.

On board, we’re delivering purpose-driven products that are better for you, our communities and the planet. We’ve introduced healthy snacks across the plane and kid-friendly meals for our youngest travelers. In Delta Premium Select, we’re now serving Delta One-inspired meals on eco-conscious dining ware and have expanded our popular, artisan-crafted Someone Somewhere amenity kits that have helped bring more than 1 million hours of paid work to rural communities in Mexico. And if you’re looking to treat yourself, customers flying in Delta One can enjoy premium rosé and the return of our beloved dessert cart on international flights.

DIGITAL TOOLS FOR A SMOOTH JOURNEY

There are many tools available right at your fingertips to ensure a smooth journey, and to assist you if your plans change. You can adjust your flight directly in the Fly Delta app, on delta.com, or by using our Messaging feature for more assistance. The Fly Delta app will also allow you to check in, select or upgrade your seat on most flights, and get your boarding pass to make your travel day that much simpler.

At the airport, keep an eye out in select cities for digital ID lanes that enable a touchless experience as you check bags and move through security with TSA PreCheck.

As we continue to elevate Delta’s world-class travel experience, our top priority has never changed: That you arrive at your destination safe, on time, with your bags – having experienced the warmth and professionalism of our people along the way. Last year Cirium recognized Delta as the most on-time airline in North America for the second year in a row – a strong foundation we’ve built on to ensure a great summer ahead.

We’ve recruited and trained more than 25,000 Delta people to meet the rise in demand and have incorporated learnings from last summer into our crew scheduling, with more pilots standing by to fly when needed. We’ve invested heavily in aircraft maintenance in key cities around the world so we can more quickly address any mechanical issues to get you on your way. And we’re continuing to partner with the Federal Aviation Administration to help minimize delays and cancels due to weather and congested airspace.

We’re ready to serve you this summer, and we can’t wait to see you in the skies. Thank you for your continued loyalty and the trust you place in us to connect you to the people and places you love most.

Sincerely,

Ed Bastian

A CUSTOMER GUIDE TO TRAVELING WITH DELTA

Editor’s note: This article was updated April 24 with the most up-to-date information.

At Delta, our team of 90,000 is focused on delivering a reliable, high-quality experience and minimizing inconvenience when circumstances disrupt scheduled operations. We deeply value the trust customers place in us to get them to their destination safely and on time. That said, we also understand the journey to people and places that connect the world sometimes doesn’t go as expected.

Our culture is founded on the principle of having our customers’ backs, particularly if they experience a delay, misconnect or cancellation. We stand by our commitment to ensure customers get to where they need to be on a safe and clean flight, on time and with their bags. That said, to improve the customer experience and operational resilience at our hub airports for the busy summer 2023 travel season – particularly at New York’s LaGuardia and JFK airports, where weather and air traffic constraints often disrupt operations – we have reduced our planned summer 2023 flying schedule. The below provides steps you can take to make the most of your Delta travel experience – not only while traveling in and out of New York, but in every city you choose to fly Delta.

We remain committed to taking care of all customers – supporting every individual throughout their travel journey. Here’s what we can do to help when it’s needed:

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

JOIN DELTA SKYMILES® TO HELP OUR TEAMS BETTER SERVE YOU AND STAY CONNECTED IN THE AIR

When you create a SkyMiles account, you get more than just miles earned toward your next trip. Your SkyMiles account ensures Delta people more seamlessly know your travel details and preferences and can aid with reaccommodating should disruptions in your travel occur. Knowing you is better for serving you. Keeping your SkyMiles profile information up to date can help Delta teams reach you quickly and allows for direct contact and updates when needed.

Additionally, as of Feb. 1, customers with SkyMiles accounts can access fast, free Wi-Fi onboard most domestic mainline flights to stay connected throughout the journey. Free Wi-Fi is designed to fuel our version of more personalized travel, powered by your SkyMiles Membership.

PASSPORT CHECK: RENEW EARLY AND VALIDATE

With the upcoming surge in summer travel, wait times for passport renewal are back to record highs. If you have plans to travel internationally, make sure to confirm your destination’s passport requirements and cushion enough time to get your passport renewed. Many countries will not grant entry to a traveler unless the passport expires at least six months after the final day of travel. That said, if your passport has less than six months remaining until it expires, plan and allow for enough time to renew before you go.

A pro tip: After renewing your passport and creating a SkyMiles account, be sure to add your passport credentials into the Fly Delta app and get it verified when you are ready to check in – it’ll save time during your next trip!

DOWNLOAD OR UPDATE THE FLY DELTA APP

Delta’s digital tools offer quick and seamless options to make changes to your itinerary – either in the Fly Delta app, on delta.com or by using our messaging feature for further assistance.

Most times, the app provides the same tools and flexibility as a call to our Reservations center – allowing customers to make changes in real-time while on the go. Click on the “Today” tab in the app for boarding information, upgrade status, baggage location and key self-service shortcuts like same-day changes. The tab is updated in real-time with the latest and most important information customers need to make sure you never miss gate changes or a change in boarding times.

If you’re a SkyMiles member, logging into the app with your unique SkyMiles membership number and mobile number will allow us to contact you if needed and better serve you as you travel (make sure your mobile number is updated and accurate for day-of travel!).

Turned off notifications by mistake? Find the notifications selection in your device’s Settings app and ensure Fly Delta app notifications are turned on. Manage your device’s sleep mode settings accordingly, too, to avoid notifications being silenced.

Make sure to keep an eye out for any emails or text messages you receive from Delta with essential updates on your flight status, travel documents and what to know before you go to the airport. (This information is also available in My Trips.)

BREEZE THROUGH SECURITY

To speed up your airport experience, enroll in CLEAR to breeze through security with either an eye or a fingerprint scan. U.S.-based SkyMiles members can enjoy preferred pricing on CLEAR memberships, and U.S.-based Diamond Medallion members can enjoy complimentary access to the program.

You can also consider applying for TSA PreCheck®. Customers with PreCheck not only have access to an expedited security line; thanks to Delta’s partnership with the TSA, qualifying PreCheck customers in ATL and DTW can move quickly and easily through the airport without scanning a boarding pass or showing a government ID. Digital ID uses facial matching technology to let customers check bags, move through security and board their flights completely hands-free.

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH RESOURCES FOR CUSTOMERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

If you or one of your travel companions needs special assistance due to sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities, Delta and the TSA have a number of resources available to you.

  • Atlanta and Minneapolis hubs offer familiarization tours that allow families with disabilities to practice the process of traveling through an airport in preparation for travel. At MSP, customers can tour a mock cabinand meet with volunteers to ready themselves for their journeys.
  • Many airports, including Delta hubs ATL, LGA and SEA, offer sensory rooms for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. To use a sensory room, locate a Delta Red Coat for assistance. Review more resources for customers on the autism spectrum, including a complete list of available sensory rooms, here.

Airbus celebrates 100th US-produced Airbus A320 Family aircraft for Delta Air Lines

Airbus has celebrated production of Delta Air Lines’ 100th U.S.-made Airbus A320 Family aircraft at the manufacturer’s facility in Mobile, Alabama. On hand for the occasion were executives from Airbus and Delta Air Lines; U.S. Sen. Katie Britt and U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL) representing the people of Alabama; Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson; other elected officials, and representatives of the more than 1,600 employees at the facility.

The milestone comes nearly seven years after Delta’s first delivery from Mobile, which took place on December 2, 2016. At the time, that aircraft was the 15th aircraft overall to be delivered from the facility. Since then, more than 375 aircraft (A220 and A320 family) have been delivered to 12 U.S.-based customers and operators.

As of the March 31 Airbus Orders & Deliveries report, Delta is operating 60 A220 family, 270 A320 family aircraft, 63 A330s and 28 A350s. The airline has another 212 aircraft on order—including A220, A320 family, A330 and A350 aircraft.

Airbus began producing A320 family aircraft in Mobile in 2015 and delivered its first aircraft from its U.S. facility in 2016. In 2017, Airbus announced it would begin producing A220 aircraft at the same site, and delivered its first aircraft in 2020. In 2022, Airbus announced it would build a second A320 family assembly line in Mobile.

The company currently employs more than 1,900 people in its production, engineering and U.S. Space & Defense MRO facilities in the Port City. In addition, some Airbus suppliers have opened facilities in the region, providing even more employment and a parallel boost to the local economy.

Delta opens its third Sky Club at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) with a nature-inspired look

Beginning April 19, Delta Sky Club customers traveling through Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) can relax and recharge in a stunning new nature-inspired oasis on the upper level of the recently expanded G concourse.

The airport’s third Club adds more than 21,000 square feet of premium space to Delta’s lounge portfolio, making it by far the largest at Delta’s Minneapolis hub. The MSP-G Club is the second lounge opened this year, and the third successive new location in the Midwest (following Chicago and Kansas City).

With seating for more than 450, customers visiting MSP-G Club will have ample space whether they’re looking to work, socialize or simply take in the views of the airfield. Eco-conscious guests can feel good about the Club’s environmental impact: the Club is moving to over 90% waste diversion, meaning a large majority of Club waste is diverted from landfills via recycling or composting.

Inspired by Minnesota’s designation as the “land of 10,000 lakes,” the MSP-G Club’s design concept features a rich color palette evoking summer sunsets at the lake – earth tones like sage greens paired with warm copper and amber hues. The Club includes a year-round, all-weather Sky Deck® with seating for 110 guests. This first-of-its kind Sky Deck is bookended by two completely open-air elements — one of which features a living plant wall, with seasonal foliage refreshed three times annually—and is suffused with natural light streaming from the overhead skylight. Guests unwinding in this unique space can also enjoy a drink from one of the Club’s premium bars, located on the deck.

Guests unwinding in the year-round, all-weather Sky Deck® at Delta's MSP G-Club can enjoy a drink from one of the Club’s premium bars, located on the deck.

“We continue to raise the bar with every location we open, and the new MSP Club is no exception,” said Claude Roussel, Delta Sky Club – Managing Director. “Our goal was to create a space that reflects the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region, transporting and inspiring customers through the Club’s design, all while delivering a full suite of amenities and our signature hospitality.”

Additional amenities of the Club include:

  • Three kiosks for quick and easy self-check-in
  • A full buffet
  • Two premium bars
  • Three soundproof booths for quiet work.

LOCAL FLAVOR SERVED UP BY A TOP CHEF

In addition to the regular menu rotation featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a wide variety of cuisines, the MSP-G Club will highlight recipes from Bravo’s Top Chef alum Justin Sutherland as part of Delta Sky Club’s Local Flavor program. Local Flavor showcases hometown chefs on a quarterly rotating basis, highlighting some of their most popular recipes for visitors passing through.

A Twin Cities native, Justin specializes in contemporary Southern cuisine. Delta is the official airline sponsor for the milestone 20th season of Bravo’s “Top Chef World All-Stars”; thanks to this partnership, guests of the MSP-G Club will be able to enjoy Justin’s take on classics like chicken and andouille gumbo, shrimp and grits, pimento cheeseburger sliders and banana pudding through mid-July.

FURTHER UPGRADES COMING TO MSP AS DELTA CONTINUES ITS AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS

Recent renovations to Gates G18-G22, including relocated and enlarged restrooms, expanded gate seating areas and new concessions, laid the groundwork for this new Club. These upgrades were precursors to larger airside renovations happening throughout the airport.

Slated for completion by the end of 2025, future renovations will update the terminal with new terrazzo flooring; refreshed ceilings and lighting fixtures; upgraded digital signage; and more. Refurbished, spacious gate areas will mirror gate improvements at other Delta terminals in LAX, LGA, ORD and SLC.

Delta is partnering with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), providing a $47 million investment to complete the project. This MSP modernization effort joins other recent airport investments, including a $50 million terminal upgrade at Chicago-O’Hare and major, multi-billion-dollar terminal overhauls at Los Angeles International Airport and New York-LaGuardia Airport. Across the country, Delta continues to invest in modern, beautiful and intuitive airport spaces, aiming to elevate customer journeys both on the ground and in the air.

Delta returns London Gatwick to New York-JFK

Delta Air Lines starts daily nonstop flights to New York-JFK. Delta is returning to London Gatwick after 15 years absence and the return of the airline’s service coincides with its 45thanniversary of serving the UK-US market.

“Delta started flying to the UK 45 years ago this month at Gatwick and so it is fitting that we are restarting our operations from Gatwick to the United States,” said Nicolas Ferri, Delta’s vice president Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India. “On board, customers will discover an elevated service and special touches to make their journey memorable.”

Delta people commemorate their airline's return to London's Gatwick Airport (LGW).

With daily flights, customers will enjoy convenient connections to destinations across North America via Delta’s New York-JFK hub. Exciting cities including New Orleans, Nashville and Miami are waiting to be discovered, while customers can connect to California’s breath-taking beaches in Los Angeles and San Diego and world-class wine region near San Francisco. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy one-stop service to Salt Lake City and Seattle, from where some of America’s most famous national parks are within easy reach for hiking, biking, and rafting.

STEWART WINGATE, CEO, GATWICK AIRPORT SAID:

“We are thrilled to welcome Delta Air Lines back to Gatwick. It means that we will expand furthermore our connectivity to the US. This trust from such a network carrier as Delta underlines the competitiveness and the operational capabilities of Gatwick.

“Delta is a huge name in the transatlantic market and being able to offer passengers across London and the South East the opportunity to travel with them between Gatwick and New York City is fantastic, providing not only wider choice, but further competition. It also demonstrates the strong pull of Gatwick as an airport for big name, long-haul airlines.”

And it’s not only travellers flying from London Gatwick who will benefit from more nonstop flights to the United States. Delta’s schedule is good news for the British economy, offering more opportunities for American tourists to visit popular destinations such as London, Brighton, Cambridge – all within easy, direct, and quick reach of Gatwick by train – and beyond in what is an exciting year ahead given the King’s upcoming coronation.

Major U.S. airlines to cut capacity into and out of New York City this summer

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have indicated they will cut the number of flights operating into and out of the New York City area this summer due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

JetBlue Airways also indicated it will also cut back at its New York City home.

Airlines will need to upgauge the type of aircraft flying into the region to minimize the shortage of seats.

Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A

The FAA estimates it only has around 55% of the air traffic controllers it needs for the area. Training takes time.

The FAA issued this report:

The FAA anticipates a busy summer air travel season to and from New York City, some of the country’s most complex and congested airspace. To ensure safe and smooth operations, the agency’s Air Traffic Organization held a productive meeting today with airlines, general aviation representatives and associations and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association to discuss ways to minimize impacts to passengers.

Participants discussed traffic flow management strategies, system resiliency and facility staffing. Operators requested collaboration and communication with the FAA early and often to plan for circumstances that could result in delays, including weather events, space launches and military operations. They discussed how closer collaboration and frequent air traffic updates would help them more effectively schedule crews.

They also requested increased coordination between facilities to take advantage of alternate routes, such as deep water routes.

The FAA discussed efforts to reduce the air traffic controller training backlog at many FAA air traffic facilities, but pointed out that staffing levels at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (N90) continue to be below targets. The agency stressed that it will be more flexible to safely accommodate the projected increase in demand this summer. The agency will be more proactive regarding traffic management initiatives.

The agency is reviewing the feedback from participants and will identify actions to improve operations this summer in the New York area.

The summit was similar to the one hosted in Florida last year that resulted in measures to improve efficiency in another high-demand area.

Background

The agency has already taken several steps in anticipation of the increased demand. It recently announced that it will give airlines flexibility on slot usage requirements. In turn, the FAA expects airlines to take actions minimizing impacts on passengers, including operating larger aircraft to transport more passengers and making sure passengers are fully informed about any possible disruptions.

Delta drops two more destinations

This brings the total of dropped cities to 17 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deletion of service is a result of a national shortage of pilots.

Delta has stressed the service deletion is temporary.

Delta launches Propel Flight Academy to train next generation of airline pilots

  • Delta Air Lines, through its Propel Pilot Career Path Program, is launching its fourth pathway for aspiring pilots since its inception in 2018: a dedicated pilot training academy in partnership with Skyborne Airline Academy.
  • Students can apply to begin training when the Propel Flight Academy opens in June at its campus in Vero Beach, Florida, with Delta providing eligible students with up to $20,000 in financial support.

Delta, through its Propel Pilot Career Path Program, is launching a pilot academy dedicated to training the airline’s next generation of aviators. The Delta Propel Flight Academy, operated in partnership with training provider Skyborne Airline Academy, will open its doors to the first class of students in June and is now accepting applications from interested candidates.

The academy is the fourth pathway type created for aspiring pilots by the Propel Pilot Career Path Program since its inception in 2018. To date, nearly 100 participants have completed Propel’s existing Company, College and Community pathway programs and are now flying for Delta, while another 700 pilots are currently enrolled in the program and working toward that same goal.

Student pilots will be eligible to receive up to $20,000 from Delta in financial support. Delta will also cover the cost of interest on student loans from select lenders.

The Propel Pilot Academy will be based in a newly refurbished 12,000-square-foot facility situated within Skyborne’s Vero Beach, Florida, campus.

“At Skyborne, every aspect of our training is designed to prepare students for airline operations in terms of core knowledge and decision making, flight deck procedures and professionalism,” said Lee Woodward, CEO of Skyborne Airline Academy. “Our team is looking forward to taking Delta Propel Flight Academy students through their pilot training journey and into their chosen career with a global airline leader who shares the same values as us in training and customer experience.”

Student pilots will complete private, instrument, commercial and certified flight instructor training, delivered in an airline-focused way. Once students have completed their first certificate or rating at the Propel Flight Academy, they will be eligible to apply to the Propel Pilot Career Path Program. Those who are selected will be required to meet certain performance milestones throughout training.

Once students have successfully completed certified flight instructor training, they will be offered employment with Skyborne as a certified flight instructor. In that role, they will receive full sponsorship from Skyborne for Certified Flight Instructor Instrument and Multi Engine Instructor Rating, as well as a generous salary and private health benefits, until they reach 1,500 hours. Upon completion, employment will begin at one of Delta’s Connection Carriers as a first officer.

14 million miles and counting: Delta celebrates most-traveled customer

Among Delta’s most frequent travelers there are the Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion Members. There are people who have traveled 1, 2 and even up to 13 million miles on Delta jets. But there is one customer who holds the travel bragging rights trump card: Todd O., Delta’s first and only 14 Million Miler.

Read that again: 14. Fourteen. FOURTEEN million miles, flying with Delta. Even more astounding: Todd leaped from 13 to 14 million miles in only 18 months. “Let’s not call it an ‘accomplishment,’” Todd laughed when congratulated and thanked for his loyalty to Delta, agreeing that the word “milestone” might be a more apt word for his achievement. “The only thing I do is sit in a seat!”

Todd’s humility is rooted in a deep appreciation of Delta’s operational excellence, reliability and the close bonds he’s forged with Delta people. “The people at Delta are special,” he said. “I admire the frontline teams.”

“Everyone who works at the Delta Sky Club knows him,” said John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) Operations Service Manager Ikrame Elaouane.

It’s not unusual for Todd to go out of his way to spend time with Delta people at the JFK Delta Sky Club, even going so far as to help those ambassadors and his fellow customers when he sees people in need, Elaouane said. “He’s very humble and very sweet.”

“He always goes to the chocolate shops and gets goodies for the employees,” said Switzerland Station Manager Noeli Morf.

“It’s lovely to have him as a customer and a friend,” Morf added, sharing stories of a 20-year friendship with Todd that has extended to dinners in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and coffees at the Zurich airport.

Todd reached 14 million miles March 6 on a flight from Zurich to New York, a trip that happened to coincide with his birthday. And did Delta ever celebrate in style.

Todd was surprised with a custom birthday cake from the flight attendants, who wished him both a happy birthday and a congratulations on becoming Delta’s first 14 Million Miler.

The flight crew was even sent an ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System) message, which are normally reserved for operational updates, from Delta’s Operations and Customer Center with a message for a personalized announcement to celebrate Todd’s 14 Million Miler milestone. “Please take a moment to have the crew acknowledge his achievement and wish him a happy birthday… On behalf of the Delta OCC it’s been an honor to help [Todd] achieve this milestone,” it said. That message inspired the pilots to make a special congratulatory announcement on the plane.

When his plane landed at JFK, Delta people were ready to celebrate there, too. He was whisked through customs by Delta’s Elite Services, then brought to the Delta Sky Club where he was greeted with more birthday wishes, congratulations and appreciation.

Todd O. celebrates achieving 14 Million Miler Status with Delta people at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

While at the Club, Todd toasted with a bottle of champagne, dined on a specially prepared menu and enjoyed another slice of birthday cake. “Everyone wanted to celebrate him,” Elaouane said. “Everyone took it as a celebration of one of our own.”

Over the course of Todd’s milestone week, Delta people would continue to celebrate their friend and his achievement in Zurich, New York and San Diego.

“All of our on-duty staff were at the gate when he arrived,” said San Diego Station Manager Jason Kempster. “We told him that it was an honor to welcome him home and thanked him for all the years he has traveled with us.”

Delta 14 Million Miler Todd O. is welcomed home at San Diego International Airport (SAN) by Delta people.

“It’s special to celebrate with the Delta staff because they’re the ones who understand,” Todd said. “[They] share the same interest in flying and Delta.”

A lifelong, self-described “av geek,” the seed of Todd’s passion for travel and flying was planted on his first flight on Pan Am at age 8. His dad took the family to a new destination every summer, and Todd then began traveling in earnest as an adult in the 1990s.

“I think one of the most amazing things about flying is that in the span of three, seven or 10 hours, you can be transported to an environment or a culture that’s completely different or be reconnecting with family and friends thousands of miles away,” he said.

Todd’s favorite plane? The now-retired fan favorite Boeing 747. The Airbus A350-900 and A330-900neo are his favorite jets in Delta’s current fleet.

Window or aisle? Window, always. “I love seeing the world from above,” he noted.

Todd calls San Diego home. One would think after a long flight from Zurich to New York and a day’s worth of 14 Million Mile festivities, he’d be ready to board the next flight to Southern California. Nope. Though he would make it home later in the week, a 14 Million Miler is going to do what a 14 Million Miler is going to do. He grabbed his bag. Made his way through the terminal. Found his gate. And boarded a flight right back to Zurich. Fifteen million miles is on the horizon.

Kansas City’s airport transformation provided the perfect opportunity for Delta to grow its presence in the area, providing another touchpoint for Midwest customers and strengthening the airline’s relationship with the “City of Fountains.”

The 11,200-square-foot Delta Sky Club will hold nearly 200 guests, with seating options to accommodate travelers looking to work, socialize or simply relax pre-flight.

The Kansas City lounge boasts not one but two all-weather Sky Decks with impressive views of the airfield. Customers can enjoy a premium bar, a full buffet, a curated art program featuring regional artists and bathrooms stocked with premium Grown Alchemist products.

Delta’s in-house meteorologists are actively reviewing and sharing up-to-date weather forecasts with others in the airline’s Operations and Customer Center as they make decisions on whether to cancel flights in the days ahead. Canceling flights is a last-resort decision that is never taken lightly. We strive to cancel flights well in advance of scheduled departure to allow our customers to adjust their plans before going to the airport.

While there are challenges that come with running an airline safely through a weather system spanning nearly 2,000 miles, Delta people on the front lines and behind the scenes remain steadfast to the airline’s commitment to safety and getting customers where they need to be as quickly as possible as operations recover at impacted airports.

Customers can review our customer guide to traveling with Delta and are encouraged to keep the following in mind:

  • Automatic Rebooking: If a flight is canceled, Delta will attempt to automatically rebook affected customers on the next available flight to get customers to where they’re going and minimize delays.
  • Itinerary Updates: Delta will send updates on itinerary changes directly to a mobile device or by email. To enable this communication, please provide contact information at the time of booking or add it online via My Trips.
  • Self Service: Customers are encouraged to download and use the Fly Delta app or visit delta.com to check their flight status and manage their rebooking with convenient self-service options.
  • Messaging: As we anticipate Delta Reservations phone wait times will be longer than usual, the Messaging feature on delta.com and the Fly Delta app is a quicker way to get in touch with one of our specialists.
