JetBlue Airways today announced new nonstop service between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and two top Caribbean destinations, as the airline unveils new plans to bring more low-fare, high-quality flights to Central Florida.

MCO

Launching in November 2023 and out for sale today, JetBlue will fly from Orlando to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Santiago, Dominican Republic (a). After its planned combination with Spirit, JetBlue expects to reach 200 flights a day in Orlando by 2027.

As a strong advocate for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s (GOAA) development of Orlando International Airport’s Terminal C, JetBlue became the terminal’s anchor tenant in October 2022. GOAA’s continued investment in the airport provides an elevated experience for JetBlue customers in Terminal C today and paves the way for continued growth in the region in the years to come.

MCO Terminals

More than 4,000 JetBlue crewmembers are based at the airport and at JetBlue’s Orlando Support Center (OSC), which includes a state-of-the-art training facility featuring classrooms, flight and cabin simulators, a ditch pool and other equipment used both for new crewmember training and for those requiring recurrent training. JetBlue’s Orlando training facility also includes The Lodge at OSC, the airline’s 24/7 dormitory facility dedicated to providing a focused training environment for crewmembers.

airBaltic carries the Stanley Cup

airBaltic has announced a unique opportunity to provide transportation of the Stanley Cup – the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion. It was carried from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto to Riga and afterwards to Tampere, as a part of the 2023 NHL Hockey Day in Finland. airBaltic operated flights from Frankfurt to Riga and from Riga to Tallinn.

The Stanley Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner of the world’s professional ice hockey championship, an annual play-off that culminates the season of the NHL. The Stanley Cup was first awarded in the 1892–93 season and is the oldest trophy that can be won by professional athletes in North America. The cup’s donor was a governor-general of Canada, Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, for whom it is named. The cup became the sole property of the NHL in 1926. It holds engraved names of teams and individuals, who have won the trophy. The only Latvian, whose name can be found on the cup, is Sandis Ozolinsh (1995–96 Colorado Avalanche).

British Airways is celebrating raising more than £27 million for its global charity partnership with Comic Relief

  • British Airways is celebrating raising more than £27 million for its global charity partnership with Comic Relief by challenging the GB Rowing Team to race a British Airways aircraft
  • Alison Hammond, Rylan and Sir Steve Redgrave put their support behind the event at London City Airport
  • Funds raised for Comic Relief through the Flying Start partnership support charities in the UK and around the world
  • Red Nose Day returns on Friday, March 17, 2023

This Red Nose Day, British Airways is proud to have raised an incredible £27.3 million for Flying Start, through the airline’s global charity partnership with Comic Relief. The money has been raised over the past 13 years, since the partnership’s launch in 2010.

To celebrate this ‘oarsome’ milestone, British Airways teamed up with Comic Relief celebrity supporters Alison Hammond, Rylan and Sir Steve Redgrave to find out if one of its aircraft could beat the GB Rowing team in a race next to London City Airport.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave brought together medal-winning members of the GB Rowing Team to take on the challenge. The World Champions and Olympians in the mixed eight boat comprised a cox, four female and four male rowers, who took on a British Airways Cityflyer Embraer 190 Aircraft.

Ahead of the race, Alison Hammond gave words of wisdom to the rowing team, showing them some of her own special warm up tips. At the same time, Rylan prepped the airline’s crew, before both celebs took to the water to cheer everyone to the finish line.

The race took place at London City Airport, next to the Royal Albert Docks with the runway running parallel to the water where many Olympic and World Champion rowers train.

Funds raised through the Flying Start partnership support projects both in the UK and around the world in destinations that British Airways flies to. Examples include Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland which provides tailored support to families with children affected by spina bifida and /or hydrocephalus, and Butterflies in New Delhi, which works with children living or working on the streets to give them life skills to prosper. Butterflies has supported an estimated 2,250 children in New Delhi over the last two years.

Emirates refreshes its livery

Emirates refreshes its livery with this announcement:

The distinctive livery of the world’s largest international airline, Emirates, has undergone a refresh.

A6-EOE

Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “Aircraft livery is the most instantly recognisable brand real estate for any airline. It’s a visual representation of our unique identity, something we wear proudly, and display in all the cities we fly to around the world. We’re refreshing our livery to keep it modern, without losing the key elements of our identity such as the UAE flag on our tailfin and the Arabic calligraphy.”

Eagle-eyed plane spotters and fans will immediately notice changes to the tailfin and wingtips.  In this latest design, the UAE flag on the Emirates tailfin is much more dynamic and flowing with a 3D effect artwork, and the wingtips have been painted red with the Emirates logo in Arabic calligraphy “popping” out in reverse white. Passengers onboard with a window view will see the UAE flag colours painted on the wingtips facing the fuselage.

The signature gold “Emirates” lettering across the main body in English and Arabic is also bolder, and 32.5% larger. On the aircraft belly, Emirates has retained its iconic red branding which it introduced in 2005.  The website URL “Emirates.com” has been dropped from the design.

This is the 3rd iteration of Emirates’ official aircraft brand colours. The original livery unveiled with the airline’s launch in 1985 had its first refresh 14 years later, with the delivery of Emirates’ first Boeing 777-300 at the 1999 Dubai Airshow.

The first aircraft to sport Emirates’ newest livery is A6-EOE, an Airbus A380, which has rolled out of Emirates Engineering this week after its makeover. Its first deployment will be to Munich on March 17 as flight EK51.

The new livery will be gradually applied across the rest of the existing Emirates fleet with 24 aircraft, including 17 Boeing 777s, expected to sport the refreshed livery by the end of 2023.  All new Emirates aircraft, from the first Airbus A350 entering the fleet in August 2024 will be delivered in this new livery.

Emirates’ original livery in 1985 was designed by UK design company Negus & Negus. All of the airline’s subsequent aircraft colours were created by its inhouse design team. Over the years, Emirates’ numerous colourful and eye-catching aircraft livery have included bespoke designs to drive sponsorship brand association, and for special occasions such as the UAE’s 50th Jubilee livery, and Expo 2020 Dubai.

Aer Lingus Regional – Emerald Airlines ATR 72-212A (ATR 72-600) EI-GPP (msn 1322) DUB (Michael Kelly). Image: 956956.

Aer Lingus and Emerald Airlines on March 15 celebrated one year of their franchise partnership, having operated its inaugural international flight under the new Aer Lingus Regional franchise from Dublin to Isle of Man, just 12 months ago.

Aer Lingus Regional services, exclusively operated by Emerald Airlines, has carried over one million customers and operated more than 22,000 flights over the past 12 months.

By peak summer, Emerald Airlines will fly up to 800 flights per week, across 30 routes serving 20 destinations in Ireland, UK, Channel Islands and France.

This includes new flights connecting Cork to Bristol, Belfast to Isle of Man as well as increased flights from Dublin to 14 airports across the UK, including a newly announced year-round service from Dublin to Liverpool and a summer service to Brest, Brittany (France). The airline is progressively bolstering its 2023 schedule, with over 2.5 million seats on sale this year.

Currently Aer Lingus Regional feeds one in eight transatlantic passengers to Aer Lingus, supporting Dublin as the natural gateway to the US. The first Aer Lingus Regional domestic flight from Dublin to Donegal took off as part of the franchise partnership, 10 months in advance of the original start date which was planned to be January of this year. The acceleration of the start date fell in line with the post pandemic uplift in demand for travel.

This summer Aer Lingus will operate its largest ever North American summer schedule to date, with over 2.25 million transatlantic seats on sale for summer 2023. Aer Lingus has the fifth largest transatlantic hub in the world at Dublin, presenting a huge opportunity for Emerald Airlines.

Aer Lingus will operate a total of 15* North American routes from Ireland next summer. Key favourites Boston, New York JFK, Chicago and Washington D.C. will operate double-daily from Dublin during peak summer.

As Aer Lingus plans to continue to grow its North Atlantic network, adding routes such as Cleveland, Ohio and the return of Hartford, Connecticut, along with building Dublin Airport as a hub, the partnership with Emerald Airlines helps Aer Lingus drive traffic onto its North American network by facilitating connectivity between smaller UK airports and North America.

Avelo Airlines Boeing 737-8F2 WL N802XT (msn 34405) BUR (Michael B. Ing). Image: 953854.

Avelo Airlines announced today it is growing its operational base at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) with a second Boeing 737 aircraft. The additional aircraft enables Avelo to add three new destinations: Memphis, Tennessee (MEM); Manchester, New Hampshire / Boston (MHT), and Rochester, New York (ROC).

The additional routes will expand Avelo’s U.S. network to 40 destinations across 23 states.

Memphis and Rochester service will begin on June 14 and Manchester service will begin June 21. All three routes will operate twice weekly on Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

With the addition to these three new destinations, Avelo will now serve 10 nonstop destinations from RDU. Manchester, Memphis and Rochester join Connecticut’s most convenient airport — Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and six Floridacities: Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Sarasota-Bradenton and West Palm Beach.

New routes from RDU

Growing Avelo at RDU

Avelo initially based one Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737-700 at RDU on February 15, 2023. The airline has hired approximately 50 RDU-based Crewmembers (employees), including Airport Customers Service, Flight Attendants, Pilots, Aircraft Technical Operations and Maintenance, and Supervisors with more career opportunities still available. With the second 737-800, Avelo expects to hire at least 35 additional Crewmembers – expanding the airline’s total RDU-based employment total to approximately 85 Crewmembers.

Growing route map from RDU, brings back memories of Midway Airlines (2nd)

Avelo operates from RDU’s Terminal 1. The airport’s original terminal represents a substantially more convenient and relaxing airport experience than its substantially larger Terminal 2. When travelers return from their trip, getting from their plane to baggage claim, and on their way home will be equally fast and seamless.

In addition to RDU, Avelo operates bases at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and the Delaware Valley’s Wilmington Airport (ILG).

Avelo serves 40 destinations across the U.S.

United Airlines now forecasts a first quarter loss due to lower demand and rising pilot pay

United Airlines is now forecasting a first quarter loss due to declining demand and rising pilot costs.

According to Reuters, “United said a combination of lower-demand in January and February and higher capacity has weakened its pricing power.

Total revenue per available seat mile, a proxy for pricing power, is estimated to be up 22% to 23% in the first quarter from a year ago, slower than the 25% growth expected earlier.”

Finnair will not increase subcontracting in inflight services in Finland

Finnair Airbus A330-302 OH-LTM (msn 994) AMS (Ton Jochems). Image: 960269.

Finnair issued this statement:

A savings agreement has been reached with Finnair’s cabin crew. As a result, Finnair has today concluded the change negotiations it started in November and discontinued the subcontracting plan for inflight services on routes to/from Thailand and North America. The savings agreement is valid until the end of 2025.

Finnair has earlier agreed on savings with pilots, senior white-collar employees and engineers, and cabin crew based in Japan and Korea, and made local agreements that increase efficiency in Finnair Technical Services and different ground operation units. The savings agreements cover 87% of Finnair’s personnel.

The cabin crew’s agreement includes, among other things, elements to increase the efficiency of cabin crew usage, changes to long-day compensation and, for example, changes to the crew layover hotel rules. With the agreement, cabin crew is included in Finnair’s staff incentive plan 2023-2025, along with all other employee groups who have made savings agreements. The staff incentive plan will produce a payout in the first quarter of 2026 if Finnair achieves the EBIT margin target set in the plan.

About 1,750 employees work as Finnair cabin crew in Finland.

In connection with the savings agreement, it was also agreed that the collective agreement applicable to Finnair’s cabin crew in Finland will be extended by one year, i.e. until January 31, 2025. In addition, a negotiation result was achieved on salary settlement for 2023 and 2024, which follows the general line of the technology industry. The salary settlement is subject to administrative approval.

JetBlue Airways Airbus A321-231 WL N929JB (msn 6031) (Ribbons) LAX (Michael B. Ing). Image: 929267.

JetBlue Airways and Shell Aviation have announced a new collaboration bringing additional supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), targeting commencement of delivery in the first half of 2023.

Within the terms of the agreement, JetBlue is expected to take delivery of 10,000,000 gallons of blended SAF at LAX over the next two years and an option to purchase up to 5,000,000 gallons more in the third year, either at LAX or other airports in JetBlue’s network.

SAF is a type of renewable fuel that exists today that drops directly into existing aircraft and infrastructure with no impact to safety or performance. SAF can be produced from a wide array of renewable sources such as agricultural wastes and used cooking oils and can lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 80% in its neat form when compared to traditional petroleum-based fuels.
