Spirit Airlines today celebrated a major company first with the unveiling of its first A321neo aircraft in a ceremony at the airline’s Detroit maintenance hangar. The aircraft, A321-271NX, N702NK, msn 11328, will operate its first commercial flight on June 7. Spirit plans to accept seven more new A321neos in 2023, and 24 more are projected for delivery in 2024 in addition to other A320 Family aircraft deliveries.
The A321 is the largest member of the Airbus A320 Family, and Spirit currently operates 30 A321ceo aircraft in its fleet of nearly 200 aircraft. Spirit already operates one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the industry and adding the A321neo to its fleet will drive even more fuel efficiency. Going forward, all of Spirit’s A321 aircraft will deliver with new engine option (NEO) advanced engines that together with fuel-saving Sharklet™ wingtip devices, are 20 percent more fuel-efficient than A321ceo aircraft. Additionally, the new aircraft offer additional range and a quieter onboard experience for Guests.
Spirit is currently in a fleet renewal process as it retires its A319ceo aircraft while adding larger, more modern aircraft to increase capacity and fuel efficiency. Spirit recently completed an agreement to sell 29 of its A319ceo aircraft, which are the oldest aircraft in Spirit’s fleet and the smallest of the Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The company is planning for all its A319ceo aircraft to transition out the fleet by the end of 2025.

Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, has signed a firm order for seven widebody aircraft to support its commercial development.
This order will allow Air Algérie to take full advantage of the flexibility of the Airbus product range, strengthen its regional services and offer an ambitious plan for transcontinental destinations. By operating the A330neo alongside the A350-1000, Air Algérie will also benefit from operational savings such as a 25 percent lower fuel burn per seat and greater flexibility resulting from the unique commonality between members of the Airbus aircraft Family.
The delivery to Lufthansa of its first Airbus A300B2 on February 9, 1976 laid the foundation for a strong partnership within European civil aviation that has now extended almost 50 years. With more than ten different Airbus aircraft types supplied since then to almost every air operator in the Lufthansa Group, today saw the 600th such aircraft – an Airbus A321neo – handed over to Lufthansa in a formal ceremony at Airbus’s Hamburg-Finkenwerder site.
Lufthansa signed its first purchase agreement with Airbus for three A300B2s in 1975 and received its first such aircraft from Europe’s new manufacturer seven months later on February 9, 1976. Subsequent years saw the first deliveries of further Airbus types: the A310 in 1983, followed by the A300-600 in 1987. The first Airbus A320 to join the Lufthansa fleet was delivered in October 1989. Over 370 aircraft of the A320 family are in service today with the various airlines of the Lufthansa Group. The first A340 followed in 1993; and just one year later the Lufthansa Airbus fleet passed the 100-aircraft mark. The A330 followed in 2004; and in 2010 the A380 – the world’s largest passenger aircraft – joined the Lufthansa long-haul fleet.
Lufthansa has also served as launching customer for a new Airbus type on four occasions to date: for the A310, the A340, the A220 and – in 2016 –A320neo. Not only the Airbus A320 family is a cornerstone of today’s Lufthansa fleet: the A350-900, which first arrived in 2016, has also become a key component in the Lufthansa long-haul fleet, and the Lufthansa Group is the world’s third-biggest A350 customer.
The 600th Airbus aircraft to be delivered to Lufthansa, which bears the registration D-AIEQ, is an Airbus A321neo. Seating 215 passengers, the A321neo is a state-of-the-art and fuel-efficient short- and medium-haul twinjet that has been in Lufthansa service since 2019. D-AIEQ has been named ‘Münster’ after the German city.
Lufthansa and Airbus attach particular importance to their collaborations on the sustainability and the research & development fronts. Over the last three decades, the Lufthansa Group has equipped several of its long-haul Airbus aircraft with instruments to conduct climate and weather research. In addition to three such Airbus jets that are presently gathering climate-related data for scientific purposes, Lufthansa is also working with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on a world-first project to convert a Lufthansa Airbus A350-900 into a research aircraft.
Lufthansa performed its longest non-stop flight to date in 2021 when it flew one of its Airbus A350-900s from Hamburg to Mount Pleasant on the Falkland Islands on behalf of the Alfred Wegener Institute. The same year also saw a Lufthansa A350-900 converted into a climate research aircraft for the CARIBIC Project.
Back in 2011 Lufthansa was the first airline to trial biofuel in its daily flight operations. For some six months, a Lufthansa Airbus A321 was operated on the Hamburg-Frankfurt route with one of its two engines powered with a fuel blend consisting 50% of biosynthetic kerosene. In the same year Lufthansa teamed up with the Forschungszentrum Jülich to conduct a new type of long-term climate research study using scheduled air services to monitor the Earth’s atmosphere. As part of this IAGOS research project, specially developed instruments were installed aboard a Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 to collect trace elements from the atmosphere in the course of the aircraft’s regular flight operations.

Air Canada has announced it will begin nonstop, year-round service between Toronto and Yellowknife in December. The new, three-times weekly service will provide convenient connections between eastern Canada and the capital of the Northwest Territories. Customers will also be able to seamlessly connect onward from Yellowknife on Air Canada’s interline partner, Canadian North.
Service between Toronto and Yellowknife will begin December 1, 2023, operated using Canadian-made Airbus A220 aircraft. It will be configured with 137 seats in a Business and Economy cabin, with onboard Wi-Fi and seatback entertainment systems featuring hundreds of hours of content and live TV at every seat. Customers will be able to earn and redeem Aeroplan points and eligible customers will enjoy premium services where available, including priority boarding and baggage handling, and Maple Leaf Lounge access in Toronto.

The new service will complement Air Canada’s existing twice daily service between Yellowknife and Vancouver and daily service between Yellowknife and Edmonton. Customers connecting for travel beyond Yellowknife can take advantage of Air Canada’s bilateral interline agreement with Canadian North, which allows travel on a single, through-checked ticket that includes baggage transfer. Destinations available via Canadian North include Cambridge Bay, Fort Simpson, Hay River, Gjoa Haven, Taoloyoak and Inuvik.

Aer Lingus today commences its inaugural service to Cleveland in Ohio, its first new transatlantic route since 2019, on cue with the surge in US demand for travel this summer.
With the start of its new service, Aer Lingus becomes the only airline to fly between Europe and Cleveland, opening a unique gateway to the Midwest for its customers.
Customer demand for the route has already taken off, with more than 90% of seats booked across the peak summer season, with general transatlantic bookings up more than 20% on 2019 levels this summer.
The bounce back in demand for premium leisure travel has fuelled the jump in demand from Aer Lingus’ UK and European customers connecting via Dublin, with bookings to Washington D.C. and Orlando increasing by 40% and 35% respectively, since 2019.
Since 2013, Aer Lingus has grown the number of transatlantic routes it serves from six to 19 in 2023 and the number of transatlantic passengers will have almost tripled in the same timeframe, from 1.1m in 2013 to an expected 3m in 2023.
The new four-times a week service from Dublin is operated with one of the airline’s state-of-the-art Airbus A321neoLRs, which is Aer Lingus’ most sustainable long-haul aircraft. It delivers up to a 20% reduction in fuel burn and CO2 emissions and almost reducing by half its noise footprint when compared to previous generation aircraft.
It accounts for over a third of Aer Lingus’ current fleet and from 2024/2025 it will boast this further with the planned delivery of six Airbus A321XLRs, which will open up further opportunities to expand Aer Lingus’ transatlantic network and deliver more new routes.
The inaugural service of flight EI87 departed the Irish capital at 3:30pm for its eight-hour 20-minute transatlantic crossing in time for its scheduled arrival at 6:50pm (local).
The returning EI86 will depart Cleveland every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 8:20pm, and will arrive back into Dublin at 4:55am the next day.

Condor will fly to Sphinx International Airport (SPX) twice a week via its Frankfurt (FRA) hub from New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX) and Seattle/Tacoma (SEA).
The airport is located on the western edge of Cairo, close to the Pyramids of Giza.
Twice a week, Condor will bring vacationers and culture enthusiasts to the newly built and recently opened airport.
The flights from Frankfurt are operated on Mondays and Thursdays on an Airbus A320.
Connecting flights to and from Frankfurt to/from JFK, LAX and SEA are operated on Condor’s new A330neo.
In addition, U.S. travelers can take advantage of Condor’s interline partners, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue, and their network of feeder flights to JFK, LAS and SEA.
The location of the new airport is ideal. Visitors can quickly and easily reach the New Egyptian Museum and the country’s most famous landmark, the Pyramids of Giza, as well as the Sphinx itself, the airport’s namesake. It is not only the proximity to the pyramids that makes the new airport attractive; the center of the capital Cairo can be reached just as quickly. Condor guests can thus experience the unique Egyptian pyramids in a short time and then explore the metropolis of Cairo.

Finnair and QANTAS Airways have entered into a long-term agreement, in which Finnair first leases two Airbus A330 aircraft with crew (wet lease) to QANTAS for a period of two years, and after the wet lease period, dry leases (aircraft lease with no crew) two of its A330s to QANTAS for a period of 2.5 years, starting in 2025. The wet lease of the first aircraft will start in October 2023, and the wet lease of the second aircraft will start in early 2024.
The agreement with QANTAS is a part of Finnair’s determined efforts to ensure the optimal use of its A330 fleet, which is range-limited in its deployment in Finnair’s own long-haul operations due to the closure of Russian airspace. The agreement with QANTAS concludes the optimization of Finnair’s fleet following the Russian airspace closure.
During the wet lease period, the aircraft will be deployed in QANTAS’ network on routes from Sydney and Singapore as well as Sydney and Bangkok. Finnair pilots will fly scheduled Finnair flights from Helsinki to Singapore and from Helsinki to Bangkok; then, they will continue flying scheduled QANTAS flights between Singapore, Bangkok and Sydney before returning to their home base in Helsinki.
The cabin crew are provided by Finnair partners based in Singapore and Bangkok, and the aircraft maintenance is performed by Finnair partners at the QANTAS destinations.
Finnair has secured sufficient pilot resources to match its fleet size, including the aircraft leased to QANTAS. The QANTAS agreement does not impact the number of cabin crew at Finnair, as they are fully deployed in other operations.
The collaboration supports the efficient and profitable deployment of Finnair’s A330 fleet. Since the closure of the Russian airspace, Finnair has built a geographically more balanced network, as avoiding the Russian airspace lengthened the flight times between Finnair’s Helsinki hub and its Asian destinations.

Allegiant Travel Company (Allegiant Air) has formally unveiled a special addition to its fleet: a vibrant, one-of-a-kind Insomniac-themed livery designed for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans and beyond. The aircraft was painted earlier this year.
The new livery, displayed on the fuselage and tail of an Airbus A320 (N198NV), evokes a festive vibe, created in the spirit of the world’s largest dance music festival, Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), to add an extra layer of excitement for all passengers to enjoy.
Allegiant, the official airline of Live Nation, teamed up with Insomniac to combine signature brand elements in the stunning design, celebrating a strategic partnership that empowers the airline’s customers to truly live the Nonstop Life. The livery arrives as demand for live events is at an all-time high. More customers across Allegiant’s network say that concerts and festivals spur their leisure travel planning.
Designers added a colorful splash of pink, purple and orange to Allegiant’s flowing ribbon encircling the fuselage and sunburst tail. airBaltic will be extending its summer season direct flight offerings from Riga to Catania (Italy), Malta, Porto (Italy), and Valencia (Spain) into the upcoming winter season, starting from the end of October 2023. Altogether, the airline is also launching 11 new routes from the Baltics and Tampere (Finland) for the winter season, bringing its network to around 80 routes connecting Riga and other cities in the region. This is the largest number of new routes in a winter season ever seen at airBaltic.
Flights to Catania will continue in November 2023 and resume again in March 2023, while flights to Malta, Porto, and Valencia will operate twice a week from November 2023. airBaltic takes passenger demand and preferences into consideration when selecting destinations, and these four locations have proven to be very popular as sunny leisure destinations.

Finnair is introducing a new Superlight ticket for journeys within Europe and making changes to its baggage allowances as of June 1, 2023. Excess amounts of carry-on baggage cause delays in boarding and impact both punctuality of flights and travel comfort. The changes are designed to address the issue of excess carry-on baggage on board, which is also a frequent feedback item from customers.
As of June 1, the Superlight ticket type will replace Economy Light tickets on Finnair journeys within Europe. It includes a small bag, which goes under the seat, but no other carry-baggage. Any purchases made at the airport are counted in the allowance, so they must also fit into the underseat bag. Finnair Plus tier members travelling with a Superlight ticket will have one carry-on bag in addition to the underseat bag as a tier benefit.
“Punctuality is very important for our customers, and the target of the changes we are now making is to ensure smooth boarding, on-time departures, and comfortable travel for everyone. Excess carry-on baggage on board is a known issue, impacting both punctuality as well as travel comfort,” says Ole Orvér, Chief Commercial Officer, Finnair. “We are also enhancing monitoring of carry-on baggage at airports, and excess carry-on baggage will be moved to the cargo hold at cost.”
Light tickets, which include a regular carry-on bag as well as a small underseat bag, will continue to be available for long-haul journeys and for Business Class on European flights. The Classic ticket type continues to be the right choice for customers who travel with both checked and carry-on baggage.
As of June 1, Finnair will also decrease the baggage allowance for Business Class. In addition, all special baggage allowances, such as golf bags and ski equipment, will be excluded from the new ticket classifications and will only be available for an additional charge.
The changes that come into force as of 1 June support Finnair’s strategy implementation through more effective operations, punctual departures at airports, and by developing the offering of travel extras.
In other news, Finnair is set to relaunch flights to Stockholm-Bromma from October 29, 2023, as it improves Nordic connectivity.
Flights to the Swedish airport will operate twice per day from Monday to Friday, with an additional Sunday evening service for customers looking to enjoy a weekend getaway.
The carrier will be one of only five airlines to operate into Stockholm-Bromma, and the only airline to serve both Bromma and Arlanda, as it continues to offer customers access to most sought-after airports across the Nordic region.
Services will depart Helsinki each weekday at 7:10am and 7:45pm, arriving into Stockholm-Bromma at 7:25am and 8:00pm respectively.
On the return, flights will leave Stockholm-Bromma at 7:50am and 8:25pm each weekday, arriving into Finnair’s home at 10:05am and 10:40pm respectively.
On Sunday, services will depart Helsinki at 7:45pm, arriving into Stockholm-Bromma at 8:00pm, before returning for Finland at 8:25pm and landing in Helsinki at 10:40pm local time.

In April, American Airlines partnered with the USO and other organizations to take 19 military service members and their families on a trip to Walt Disney World as part of the Salute to the Troops event. These families — all impacted by cancer — had the chance to escape their worries back home and make unforgettable memories together.
American chartered an Airbus A319 aircraft from Washington, D.C. (DCA) to Orlando, Florida (MCO), and planned a special inflight experience and hero’s welcome for the participants. The airline participates in events like Salute to the Troops year-round that have benefited hundreds of wounded and ill military service members and their families.
This year, the event took on special meaning for one of our team members when an American Airlines pilot who is also an Army Reserve Officer had the opportunity to attend with his family. First Officer Michael Huber’s wife is battling cancer and the trip provided much-needed fun and relaxation for the Huber family.
In honor of Military Appreciation Month in May, we salute the country’s military service members — past and present — including the 8,500 American Airlines team members who are veterans or currently serving in the National Guard or Reserves. The airline has a long history of honoring our nation’s heroes, and that work continues through programs and partnerships led by our Military and Veterans Initiatives program.

Frontier Airlines launched nonstop service on May 11 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ), San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Ontario International Airport in Southern California (ONT).
Additionally, on May 12, Frontier will launch nonstop service from ATL to La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, Guatemala (GUA) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). With the new service, Frontier serves a total of 38 nonstop destinations from ATL.

Wizz Air has announced further expansion to its base in Warsaw, where it allocates one of its Airbus A321neo aircraft.
The allocation of the new aircraft is enabling the launch of one new route to Agadir, Morocco, as well as increased frequency on 13 routes from Warsaw.
The allocation of one more aircraft to Wizz Air’s Warsaw base will grow the base to eleven aircraft. The move brings the number of routes from the base to 58, including the launch of Agadir from Poland’s capital city.
Furthermore, the additional capacity allows Wizz Air to increase frequency of its flights from the base to Alicante, Barcelona, Basel, Brussels Charleroi, Copenhagen, Eindhoven, Malaga, Milan Bergamo, Nice, Oslo Sandefjord Torp, Rome, Tenerife and Valencia.

SAS has made this announcement:
Starting on November 4, 2023, SAS returns to Africa with weekly flights to Agadir, Morocco. SAS will fly to Agadir from both Copenhagen and Stockholm during the winter season until the end of March 2024, offering a convenient timetable with daytime departure and arrival.
Agadir is well known for its long beaches, warm winter weather and beautiful scenery. The area also offers plenty of activities such as golf, great surfing, and a chance to enjoy the exquisite Moroccan cuisine.
SAS will operate the Agadir route using Airbus A320Neo aircraft, the most efficient single-aisle aircraft, with 20% savings on fuel efficiency and emissions, seating up to 180 passengers in 2 classes – SAS Plus and SAS Go.
