10 Spirit Airlines passengers hospitalized after battery fire forces flight to make emergency landing in Florida

At least 10 passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Orlando were taken to the hospital after a battery fire forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville on Wednesday.

EgyptAir to restore the Cairo – New York JFK route, takes delivery of its first Airbus A321neo

EgyptAir is planning to restore the Cairo – New York JFK route on March 26, 2023.

Flight MS 985 operating from Cairo to New York, the take-off will be at 03:20am CLT to arrive at John F. Kennedy international airport at 09:00am EST.

While flight MS 986 scheduled from New York to Cairo will take-off at 12:00pm EST from John F. Kennedy international airport to arrive at Cairo international airport next day at 04:40am CLT.

Meanwhile AerCap has delivered the first Airbus A321neo to EgyptAir.

Aeromar ceases all operations in Mexico, will not reorganize

Transportes Aeromar, S.A. de C.V, doing business as Aeromar ceased all operations on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 due to financial problems. The airline will not be reorganizing.

Transportes Aeromar, S.A. de C.V. (Aeromar) was the oldest airline in Mexico. The company, with 100% private capitalization and headquartered in Mexico City was incorporated in January 1987, initiating regular regional operations from the Toluca International Airport on November 7 of the same year. In April 1988, the company was authorized to transfer its operational base to the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

Aeromar owes over MX$5 billion pesos (US $268 million) to different creditors, including the Mexican authorities.

ITA Airways’ first Airbus A320neo enters operations

The Airbus A320neo (EI-INB) with ITA Airways’ new blue livery performed its first commercial flight on February 20. Flight AZ 1781 departed from Rome Fiumicino Airport at 1:20pm local time, to reach Palermo’s Punta Raisi Airport.

The Airbus A320neo is dedicated to Francesco Moser, the extraordinary Italian cyclist of the 1970s and 1980s, and features unique design details such as the Zorro mask and sharklets.

Bringing together technology and efficiency, the Airbus A320neo delivers 20% less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. With the new A320neo, ITA Airways will further enrich its modern and environment-friendly fleet, which will feature 80% new generation aircraft by 2026, with the consequent downscaling of 1.3 million tons of CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, the A320neo features an innovative cabin design, granting passengers a unique travel experience courtesy of more modern and comfortable seats.

The new A320neo will be serving the Company’s domestic and international network from Rome Fiumicino to the airports of Brindisi, Bari, Bologna, Catania, Genoa, Milan Linate, Naples, Palermo, Lamezia Terme, Turin and Venice in Italy, and those of Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid and Brussels in Europe, to cover all ITA Airways’ short- and medium haul destinations in the 2023 summer season.

Fly Atlantic wants to fly from Belfast to North America in the summer of 2024

Fly Atlantic (Belfast) is a new low-fare transAtlantic proposed airline.

The upstart is planning to launch operations in 2024 for the summer season.

The proposed airline is planning to linking cities in Europe and North America through its hub at Belfast International Airport.

Fly Atlantic plans to fly to 35 destinations from its Belfast base, with tickets going on sale in early 2024.

The proposed airline intends to have a fleet of six aircraft – either Airbus A321neos or the Boeing 737 MAXs. It plans to expand to 18 aircraft within the first four years.

SmartLynx Airlines to operate in Australia with Airbus A330s

SmartLynx Airlines has received Australian Foreign Air Transport Operator Certificate (FATAOC) granted by the Australian Civil Aviation Authority. The certification allows the airline to begin operations to, from, and within Australia.

Operating flights to Australia has been integral to SmartLynx’s strategic plans to expand its global network by entering new markets. This certificate authorizes starting operation in Australia of Airbus A330-type aircraft and the company plans to receive certification also for other aircraft types A320, A321, and B737.

To receive FATAOC, SmartLynx has fulfilled all operational requirements and submitted the necessary certificates of airworthiness and maintenance schedules for Airbus A330-type to be operated in Australia.

Latvian-based SmartLynx Airlines is the largest ACMI service provider in Europe, owning one-third of the market. Today the airline operates also in the USA, North America, Asia, and Africa. The company holds Air Operator Certificates (AOC) in Latvia, Estonia, and Malta.

The current fleet size consists of 55 aircraft and by end of 2023 is set to increase to 65 aircraft, including Airbus A320 (29), A330-300 (6), A321 (8), Airbus A321F (13), and Boeing 737 MAX (9) aircraft.

The Bolivian flag carrier is adding two Airbus A330-200s to replace its Boeing 767-300s on its long-range routes, especially Miami.

The pictured N1452X (top) was formerly operated by Virgin Australia as VH-XFH. The airliner is being leased from Avolon and is expected to take on a CP- registration on delivery.

Azul to fly to Paris Orly

Azul Linhas Aéreas has announced the expansion of its international long-haul network and the addition of its 2nd European destination. 

Nonstop service from the Sao Paulo – Viracopos hub to Paris Orly airport will begin on April 26, 2023.  This will be the first South American destination for Paris Orly and the only nonstop service between the two airports.  The service will be flown by Azul’s modern and efficient Airbus A350-900 aircraft with seating in 3 cabins for 334 passengers: 33 in Azul Business, 118 in Azul Economy Extra and 183 in Azul Economy.

With six weekly frequencies, from Wednesday to Monday, flights depart Azul’s Viracopos hub at 23:00 enabling convenient connections from our network all over Brazil with a scheduled arrival time at Paris Orly of 15:30 local.  In the return direction the flight departs Orly at 22:15 arriving into Viracopos at 4:45AM local time. On July 31, the flights will be daily.

Europe’s winter flights are exceeding pre-pandemic levels

According to Cirium, the latest data is showing how flights to winter destinations have exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

Cirium – Ski data

  • This February, scheduled departures from the UK are projected to hit 81% of February 2019 levels, with over 60,600 flights scheduled to depart during the month – equating to over 10.7 million seats
  • A number of routes from the UK to Europe’s most popular ski resorts are scheduled to exceed pre-pandemic levels this February, as winter leisure travel and ski holidays boom
  • In Austria, the popular ski gateway of Innsbruck is scheduled to see 8% more UK flights this February compared to 2019, while Salzburg will also see 11% more UK flights than pre-pandemic. The lesser-known city of Klagenfurt will see a huge 50% uplift in UK arrivals as tourists head for the slopes
  • In France, the popular winter airport of Chambery is scheduled to see 13% more UK arrivals than February 2019, however, Grenoble and Lyon remain 1% and 12% below pre-pandemic UK flight levels respectively
  • Northern Italy has also showed encouraging growth, with scheduled flights from the UK to Bergamo up 37% this month versus the same period in 2019.  Fellow Milan airport, Malpensa, is also projected to see a 6.7% increase in UK arrivals compared to February 2019. Flights to Turin and Verona are also scheduled to overtake pre-pandemic levels, with 11% and 7% more UK arrivals respectively.
  • Flights from the UK to Geneva, Switzerland’s main skiing gateway, remain 6% down in February 2023 compared to February 2019.

Flybe 2 fails, goes into receivership, ceases operations

Flybe (2nd) (Birmingham) has failed like the original Flybe. Today, January 28, 2023, the reborn carrier went into receivership and administrators were appointed. The new Flybe ceased all operations.

Previously in October 2022, the company ceased its flights between Leeds/Bradford and London due to low demand.

In the same month, the airline suspended flights to Southampton.

  • Flybe was scheduled to serve 17 destinations across the UK and Europe in 2023 – with Belfast City, Birmingham and London Heathrow being the largest destinations by flights
  • The airline operated 7x daily flights at Heathrow, Britain’s busiest airport, to Amsterdam, Belfast, Newcastle and Newquay
  • Next week (30 Jan – 5 Feb) Flybe was scheduled to operate 292 flights – equating to over 22,700 seats.

This month the airline had previously announced it was increasing frequencies from Belfast City Airport and Birmingham International Airport across the UK and Amsterdam starting on March 26, 2023 for the summer of 2023:

All of these plans will now probably not happen in administration.

The restored airline launched operations on April 13, 2022.
